Ubuntu 16.04 — New features

Linux Kernel

4.4

TuxlogoUbuntu 16.04 LTS comes with a modified version of Linux kernel 4.4.

This kernel introduces numerous improvements in system stability, performance, power efficiency, and file system handling, and introduces support for the latest Intel and AMD hardware.

  • Improved Intel Skylake processor
  • support

  • 3D support in virtual GPU
  • driver

  • New driver for Corsair Vengeance K90
  • TPM 2.0 chip
  • support

  • RAID 5 journaling support

It also features drivers for the Logitech G29 racing wheel and allows compatibility with hardware features on some newer Toshiba laptops.

ZFS

A bigger (and somewhat controversial) change is the addition of support for the Zfs file system in Linux, the first version of Ubuntu to support it natively, out of the box.

ZFS is best described as a combination of a volume manager (such as LVM) and a file system (such as ext4, which is still the default for Ubuntu installations).

Ubuntu has produced a reference guide to help those interested in file systems leverage ZFS in Xenial.

Other system changes

Python 3.5 defaults to 16.04. Applications that are based on or use Python 2 remain available and will continue to function normally. Developers are encouraged to update their software to take advantage of Python 3.

As we’ve warned above, if you’re using a device with AMD Radeon graphics hardware, you should NOT upgrade at this time. The fglrx driver is now deprecated at 16.04, and while open source alternatives (radeon and amdgpu) are recommended, they do not offer comparable performance.

Snappy

apps on ubuntu

Snappy

is Ubuntu’s new packaging format. It aims to help app developers bring newer versions of their apps to the Ubuntu desktop, instantly, reliably, and securely.

We took a look at the key benefits of Snap packages in a previous post, which is worth reading for a full rundown.

But the bottom line is this: you’ll be able to install new versions of your favorite apps on Ubuntu sooner than before, and without having to worry about missing or outdated dependencies.

New keyboard shortcuts

The

default shortcut for opening the HUD (the ‘heads-up display’ that allows you to quickly search for options in the focus apps menu) changes from alt to alt+space in this version

.

The window control key binding changes from alt + super

Unity is Ubuntu’s default desktop shell. A number of bug fixes for some long-standing issues appear in your latest outing.

Yes, as you may have already heard, Ubuntu 16.04 finally allows you to move the Unity launcher to the bottom of the screen, six long years after users first asked.

The ‘option’ to change position is not exposed through the native system settings app, but lurks in the nerdy lower regions of the dconf editor. However, third-party utilities like Unity Tweak Tool (available from Ubuntu Software) offer an easier switch with a single click.

Ubuntu’s controversial online search features are now disabled by default for new installations.

A win for the privacy-conscious, you will no longer have to sift through results tangentially related to eBay, Wikipedia, and the web when searching for a local file or app.

Session shortcuts have been added to the Dash to make it even faster to restart, log out, or shut down your PC.

shortcuts Changes since Unity 7.2 (used

in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS) Since a

good portion of you will be upgrading from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, we will mention some other notable tweaks in the desktop shell since the version to which He’s used to it.

Among them:

  • App menus can be made to ‘Always Show
  • Faster login and logout animations New
  • overlapping scroll bars (no more thumb debugger)
  • Drag and drop apps from the Dash to the desktop to Create shortcuts
  • The computer can no longer be ‘turned off’ when the screen is locked
  • Dash: Keyboard navigation improvements
  • New settings to control the delay from showing now (when you press the Alt key

New Software Center in ubuntu 16.04 LTS
The new background

Almost all new versions of Ubuntu come with a new desktop background and a selection of new wallpapers contributed by the community.

The default desktop background is a tasty mix of purple, albeit a far cry from the heady days of the Resistant Heron! Whether you keep it or change it, the new default desktop background will at least make it easier to spot Ubuntu in the wild!

Several

new

apps are shipping as part of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, including a new desktop calendar app and a new software store (pictured above).

Both are welcome additions to the desktop, with Calendar able to display your upcoming appointments and reminders in the Date and Time Indicator

.

The new software application replaces the Ubuntu Software Center. Use it to search, browse, and install from hundreds of thousands of free and open source apps, as well as some non-open source and paid apps.

It is not perfect, it does not always correctly mark installed applications, it leaves dependencies on uninstallations, but these errors will be corrected in later updates.

The Cheese webcam booth allows you, surprise, to take screenlit selfies using your webcam.

The latest versions of Mozilla’s Firefox web browser and Thunderbird email client are also (naturally) included, as are new versions of other key applications such as LibreOffice, Evince and the Eye of GNOME image viewer.

Ubuntu Trusty to Xenial UpgradeSoftware Builder
, Calendar and USB Startup
  • Firefox 45
  • Thunderbird 38
  • Chrome 48
  • LibreOffice 5.1
  • Nautilus
  • (aka ‘Files’) 3.14.2

  • Totem (aka ‘Videos’)
  • 3.18 Drum machine 3.3 GNOME Terminal 3.18

  • Eye of GNOME 3.18 Shotwell
  • 0.22

Two applications that

you will no longer find in the new installations are the Brasero disc burning utility and the Empathy instant messaging client

.

Both have been removed from the ISO image

.

If you are upgrading from a previous version, please note that these applications will not be uninstalled

.

A more xenoquial Ubuntu

16.04 LTS release is a must-have

upgrade.

And that’s not just my opinion: more than 18,000 of you have voted so far in our intents poll and 94% of you plan to upgrade

.

Unity 7 once again removes ammo for its critics to fire.

Xenial is a pleasant release. It is a desktop operating system that is as suitable for end users as it is for developers as it is for mainframes such as IBM LinuxOne.

Many often think that “convergence” is solely a smartphone that becomes a PC. But from smartphones to supercomputers, Ubuntu is already converged.

With a five-year support period, the lure of new applications through the promising Snappy package system, and better hardware support, the case for not upgrading is quite thin.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS in a nutshell:

  • Improved Unity Desktop Online searches
  • disabled in Dash
  • Linux Kernel 4.4
  • New

  • Software Store
  • Updated applications, inc. LibreOffice 5.1
  • New desktop calendar application
  • Support for ZFS
  • Python 3.5
