GParted is a graphical tool for managing disks in Linux. It is very powerful. You can do almost any type of partitioning and disk management with GParted. GParted has a simple user interface and is very easy to use. In this article, I will show you how to use GParted on Ubuntu. So, let’s get started.
GParted is not installed on Ubuntu by default. But it is available in the official Ubuntu package repository. Therefore, it is easy to install. First, refresh the APT package repository cache

with the following command: Now,
press y
and and then press <Enter> to continue

Starting GParted: Now that GParted is installed, you can launch
GParted
from the Ubuntu application menu as you can see in the screenshot below
.
GParted
requires root privileges. To allow root privileges to GParted, type your login password and click Authenticate.

Storage Device Selection: The first thing you need to do in
GParted
is to select the
storage device
you want to work with. To do that, click on the drop-down menu in the upper right corner of GParted.
Then select the storage device you want to work with

As you can see, I selected my 32GB USB stick.

> Creating a new partition table:
To create
a new partition table
using GParted, click > Create Partition Table… as indicated in the screenshot below.
You will see the following dialog box. From here, you can select the type of partition table you want. The most popular partition table types are msdos and gpt. By default, msdos is selected. But you can click the drop-down menu to change it.
As you can see, there are so many types of partition tables
to choose from.
Once you have selected a partition table type, click Apply

An empty partition table should be created as you can see in the screenshot below.
Creating new partitions:
Before creating a new partition, make sure you have enough unallocated free spaces. Now, to create a new partition with GParted, select the unallocated space and click on Partition > New.

You can move the slider back and forth to resize the partition. You can also type the size of the new partition directly into the New Size (MiB) text box as indicated in the screenshot below.
You can also select a file system for your new partition using the File System drop-down menu. By default, ext4 is selected. This is one of the things I like about GParted. Formats the partition on the desired file system when creating a new partition.
As you can see, GParted supports many file systems. The file systems that are installed on your computer should be enabled here. Those that are not installed are disabled at this time. To enable the disabled ones here, you will need to install the file systems on your computer.
You can also type a partition name and label for your new partition. These are used to make it easy for you to identify the partition, nothing more. You can also leave them empty if you want. These are completely optional.
As you can see, a partition is created. But changes are not saved permanently. To save your changes, click the check icon as shown in the screenshot below.
Now, click Apply.
The new partition is being formatted

Once done, click Close.

Resize partitions:
There are 2 resizing operations you can perform on
a partition,
extend and shrink. To extend a partition, you must have unallocated free spaces after that partition. To resize a partition, right-click on the partition and click Resize/Move.
Now, you can use the driver to extend or shrink the partition. You can also type the new partition size directly into the New Size (MiB) text box.
Once you’re done, click Resize/Move

If everything is fine, click the check icon to save the changes permanently

Now, click Apply to confirm the operation.
The changes must be applied. Now, click on Close.
As you can see, the partition has been resized

Deleting
partitions:
I created a new partition to demonstrate how to delete partitions with GParted. Right now, the partition table looks like this:
To delete a partition
, right-click the partition and click Delete. Now, to
save the changes permanently, click on the mark icon as marked in the screenshot below

Now, to confirm the operation, click Apply.
When the operation is complete, click Close
.
As you can see, the partition is deleted.

Format a partition with GParted: To format
a partition with GParted
, right-click on the
partition and click Format to and select the type of file system on which you want to format the partition.
Now,
to save the changes permanently, click on the mark icon as marked in the screenshot below

Now, click Apply.
When the operation is complete, click Close

As you can see, the partition is formatted according to the newly selected file system type.
